70's Hair

This week Lottie showed us two different hairstyles; big wavy hair created with brickwork and frizzy disco hair. These two hairstyles were very popular in that decade, and were kept in the 80's too, but slightly changed. Farrah Fawcet's hairstyle was very popular back then; big and wavy with the hair and fringe going out of her face.

Then we looked at disco hair. This hairstyle was very big, created with tiny curls that were later brushed out. Looks very much like an afro hair, suprisingly, even men wore it! It reminds me of the frizzy hairstyles we did last year for our 'New Elizabethans' project, probably because we used the frizzing technique to achieve this look, and so did they, back in the disco era.

Practice in class:

1. Waves and volume

First you need to section the front and the back. Then start your brick work curling the hair with a bigger tong barrel from the crown of the head going down. If you are using plastic rollers instead of heat, use the bigger sized ones. The same effect can be achieved by blow drying the hair, it is all about volume and lift. The reason why we did the brick work technique is so the gaps and lines don't show. The sections don't have to be too small, but don't take too much hair either. Also, there should be the same number of curls on each side. Pin each section after you curl it and don't take the pins out until the hair has completely cooled down (best to do it after you've curled the entire head). Use the pin tail comb to grab all the hair that is falling out to get better looking curls.

Then move on the the front section. You can either do a middle parting, or go slightly to either side. Curl the using brick work technique, too, but make sure that the hair is going away from the face.

When the hair cools down, take out the pins. Slightly backomb each section as you are taking them out just to keep the lift. Then brush the hair, but not completely. Brush over and under the hair to keep the shape of the curl. Lastly, style the front so the curls are going out from the face. Use hairspray so the curls stay in longer and the hair doesn't go flat.

2. Disco hair

We used the frizzing technique with grips and a straightener, but you can do it with tiny spiral or rope curls. You can either start from the roots and create an afro look or you can keep the roots straight and have the curls sticking out. Instead of sectioning the hair with a straight line, make it go zig-zag. That gives the hair a more natural look, and hides the lines.
Twist the hair around the hair grip, from one side to another. Then you secure the end with a pin and hold the straightener for about 5 seconds.

Take out the grip and brush out the hair with an afro comb and you get a great  70's disco hairstyle.

The only hard part about this hairstyle and technique that it takes a long time to create it. The sections need to be very small if you want to achieve big frizzy disco hair.
We didn't have enough time to create both hairstyles in our two-hour lecture, but Lottie said that was fine, as long as we know how to create it.
