Women didn't have as much time to do their hair as they used to, expecially in the 40's - when the Victory rolls became popular. A lot of them had lost their husbands in the war which meant they had to look after their children, the house and work at the same time. That's why these hairstyles became so popular as they didn't take too long to create and the curls would stays for a few days, but they'd still look put together. The victory rolls continued into the 50's, but there were also some other glamorous hairstyles.
Hair salons and hairdressing was becoming more popular, therefore, so did the styling products, hairdyes as well as shampoo and conditioner. Hairspray was a must for creating all of these hairstyles.
There were a lot of tools and ways to get those curls, which were the base of every 50's hairstyle; rollers, curling irons, flat irons and or hair clippies. A lot of women slept with rollers or pinned hair to get those perfect curls.

The victory rolls where the most popular hair hairstyle worn by everyone from the housewifes to actresses and sex simbols of the time. The rolls were very versatile and there were a lot of different ways to style them. They could be going different directions; the side, centre, larger, smaller, you could have only one, two, or more, etc.
A sophisticate fringe was created by pulling a chunk of the hair out of the victory roll, leaving it hanging over the forehead like a spring.

One of the easiest ways to put the hair up was to tie it in a ponytail. Those with long fringe would have them pinned in victory rolls. Ribbons were mostly used to secure the ponytail.

Acrtresses such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn used to wear shorter hairstyles, expecially the Italian cut. It was a soft but sculptured hairstyle created with waves and curls. This hairstyle was taken from the italian actresses from early 1950's film.
Later, towards the end of the decade the bouffant hairstyle as well as the beehive came around. These were big, backombed hairdos with hair pinned up on the top of the head with ringe and some hair would fall on the sides. They stayed in the 60's where they were worn in their full glory - the 60's beehive.
